We provide here information about the evidence, costs and outcome of the 75 programmes assessed as part of the Foundations for Life review. The table below provides the strength of evidence ratings for all programmes and cost ratings for programmes rated as NE, 2, 3 or 4 (when cost information was available). Links to the individual programme reports are also provided. Programmes can be sorted alphabetically, or on the basis of their outcome domain.
All 75 programmes aim to support children’s development through parent–child interaction in at least one of three domains: attachment security, behavioural self-regulation and early language and cognitive development. For the purposes of this review, programmes were classified into one of these three domains on the basis of their best fit for their best evidence. It should be recognised, however, that many of these programmes have good evidence across two or more of these domains.
Guidance as to what these ratings mean can be found here. It is important that these ratings are understood and used carefully to guide commissioning. They are not by themselves sufficient basis for commissioning but should be understood in conjunction with the full report, the disclaimer set out on each report. and the guidance as to what our ratings mean. The assessments reported here are based on information gathered through the specified review. The child outcomes reviewed were limited to impacts on attachment and/or parent sensitivity; behaviour and social and emotional skills; and cognitive development, in particular early literacy and use of language. The rating included represents an assessment in relation to these outcomes only. The rating is an independent statement of opinion as of the date it is expressed. It is not a recommendation or a statement of fact.
These ratings are designed to provide information for those developing early intervention programmes and systems. The evidence can be used to inform and assist professional judgement, but it is not a substitute for it. This Table does not purport to contain all the information that may be required by third parties in order to exercise their judgement.
